Name It (2020)

for soprano and snare drum

The original idea of my piece came from the controversies involved in the naming of the new Coronavirus. Despite the official name being COVID-19, some people insisted on using discriminatory names to instigate hatred. I was frightened by such an evil use of languages which prompted me to think about its political implications. My reflections are thus encapsulated in this piece, in which I break down names of the virus into fragments to be sung by the soprano and occasionally the percussionist. The two players will be competing against each other throughout the piece in various ways. The obvious theatricality is a common feature of my works which is derived from my Chinese influences.

This piece was selected to be performed at

St Petersburg International New Music Festival "reMusik.org" (2020)
